Hello
I am contacting you to ask if you have any photographs of the early Army Apprentice Boys, Harrogate intake 1948B.
My father, Roy Stuart Dodson, enlisted in the army in June 1948 as a ‘Boy’ at the age of 16. He then undertook an Army Apprenticeship with the Signals. After completing his apprenticeship, he was posted to The Canal Zone and served at 3GCHQ Fayid, Egypt from 1951 to 1953. He was then posted to RAF Oberkirchen, Hanover, from 1954 to 1958. He left in 1958 as Foreman of Signals, and also received a promotion to Queen’s Warrant Officer at the age of 25, which he turned down, wanting to retire from Army Service as a Reserve, rather than serve another 5 years with the ‘Colours.’ (His words). During his service, he had MI8 and GCHQ Cheltenham High-Security clearance.
He wrote his memoirs covering his experience in the Army from 1948 to leaving in 1958. He describes in detail his Apprentice Days, about the teachers, people, fellow soldiers, buildings, equipment, exam questions, events, etc. Life in Egypt during the tense times of the Arab revolts and Suez Crisis. He describes, working very close to the East German border developing machines to intercept Russian signals, which included a primitive parabola dish. There is an in-depth description of the equipment researched and developed whilst he was in the Royal Signals.
It is 40 typed A4 pages, if you would like me to send you a copy I am more than happy to email it to you. Unfortunately, I cannot send a paper copy as I do not have a printer.
Please contact me and let me know. [email protected]
